Small Business Matters Coalition working for our members!
RMA/MBBP

Just an update for members of the Retail Merchants Association, now operating as RMA Canada. RMA is a member of the Small Business Matters Coalition. Together, RMA and the Coalition have been leading the fight for lower credit card interchange fees.

These fees account for a staggering $5 billion a year that retail merchants pay, among the highest level in the world. While our efforts have yielded some positive results, there is still much more to be done.

The Federal Minister of Finance, Bill Morneau, launched a review of the credit card payments system and as part of that process, the Coalition has pushed forward aggressively on the need for further reductions. The review is scheduled to be completed later this fall and we look forward to hearing from the Minister how he intends to proceed. Any reduction we are able to obtain is money back in your pockets, our members. We will never give up on this fight.

As one of the four founding members of the Coalition of Associations, this is how RMA Canada is helping our members
RMA/MBBP

Today the Small Business Matters Coalition, which CFIG leads, joined the Prime Minister for his announcement that the Small Business tax rate was being reduced to 9% from the current 10.5%.
The government of Canada announced two reviews to achieve fairness and transparency: one on the issue of credit card payments and the second relating to the small business tax system. The SBM Coalition supported the principles of achieving fairness and transparency. Our priority was also to see credit card fee reductions and lower taxes emanating from both reviews.

As well, while the Coalition supported the principle of achieving fairness and transparency in the review, we engaged the government in a constructive and candid discussion about some elements of the proposals that had been floated in the consultation. The SBM coalition indicated strong support for income sprinkling, which if anything, require greater simplicity in allowing family owned and operated businesses that play by the rules do not incur additional costs nor face greater red tape.

The Coalition also asked the government to drop the proposal about lifetime capital gains, since intergenerational transfer of businesses should be encouraged, not stymied.

The Coalition also raised concern about the proposals around the use of passive income, which in our view, impact the ability of our collective members to save for a rainy day, but also grow the business.

CFIG and the Coalition are pleased to see that our concerns and suggestions have been completely addressed. The lifetime capital gains proposals have been dropped. Taxes were reduced. Income sprinkling will be retained, but simplified and the government will work with the Coalition and CFIG in the weeks ahead at coming up with clear language defining contributions to the business that ensure none of our members are impacted.

The governments decision with respect to the issue of passive income will be made on Wednesday. The Coalition has been briefed on the decision but will respect the request of the Prime Minister to keep this issue confidential at this time. But we look forward to sharing that with the members in the days ahead.

Next up: Credit card fees! Stay tuned.
